Direct answer: The body paragraphs of the 36 article pages contain 213 links: 70 external and 136 to other internal pages, with only seven pointing to a product page (3.3%); solution, service and contact pages receive zero in body copy. Only three of 36 pages link to a product page from the text (E23 twice, E26 once).

Twenty-five pages have at least one body link, but almost all point to news, about pages or other articles, so a reader who finishes the article rarely reaches a product page. The total looks reasonable; the links that actually carry the handoff number seven.

Method: count only links inside body paragraphs

The study reuses the 36 article pages cached on 2026-11-03 08:40–08:41 (10 sites) with zero network requests. It counts <a href> inside <p> only when the paragraph has 20 or more visible characters and no more than five anchors, which excludes navigation menus, link lists and "related reading" blocks.

Internal body links mostly go to previous/next articles, other posts, about pages and news lists; the four business targets together account for seven links.

All seven product links come from two sites: two on each of E23's pages and three on E26's page. The other 33 pages leave the handoff entirely to navigation and footer.

Relationship to the other article studies

Study 49 recorded 3,583 links across the same pages, 270 of them external; this study looks only at the 213 links inside body paragraphs and finds very few business links. Study 76's body-structure pilot shows 445 paragraphs with a median of 58 characters, so the copy is short and rarely links to products. Study 67's anchor-text pilot shows highly templated labels. Together, the article pages read as information pages rather than handoff pages.

What this means for acceptance

  1. Make "body link to a product page" an acceptance item. Require at least one in-text link to a relevant product or solution page per article.
  2. Navigation is not a handoff. Seven product links came from three pages; the rest rely on menus and footers.
  3. Give solution and service pages an entry too. Body links to solution, service and contact are all zero.
  4. Name the target in the link text. Together with study 67's anchor findings, labels should say where they lead.
  5. Measure body links, not all links. Whole-page counts are inflated by navigation.

Limits

  • Conservative rule: only paragraphs with 20+ characters and ≤5 anchors count, so link lists and short paragraphs are excluded and body links may be undercounted.
  • Keyword matching: product/solution/service use href keywords, so custom paths are missed.
  • No relevance judgement: the study counts links, not whether the product matches the article.
  • One snapshot: cached on 2026-11-03; redesigns are not rechecked.
  • 10 sites, 36 pages: a pilot, no industry claim.

Data and reproduction

Anonymised data: equipment-article-inline-links-2026.csv (36 rows × 11 columns: body links, product/solution/service/contact/other/external, business links and whether any exist). The repository keeps docs/research/2026-11-article-inline-links.csv.

Parser: scripts/article_inline_link_probe.py; unit tests: scripts/test_article_inline_link_probe.py (no network, seven tests). Run:

python -m unittest scripts.test_article_inline_link_probe
