Direct answer: digital product platforms (downloads, licenses, software/subscriptions) in 2026 mostly charge “percentage + fixed fee” with no monthly fee: Gumroad 10% + $0.50 per direct transaction (30% when a new customer buys through Discover); Lemon Squeezy 5% + $0.50; Paddle 5% + $0.50 (custom for high volume). At a $50 average order and $5,000/$20,000/$50,000 monthly revenue: Gumroad 550/2,200/5,500; Lemon Squeezy and Paddle both 300/1,200/3,000 (USD/month). The point is not “5% vs 10%” but that the fixed $0.50 raises the effective rate on small orders: at a $10 order, 5%+$0.50 is 10% and 10%+$0.50 is 15%; at $200, 5.25% and 10.25%. All three are Merchant of Record (MoR); the differences are fee, Discover traffic, payment methods/currencies, subscriptions/licenses and high-volume contracts.

This guide is for creators, product and finance teams selling digital downloads, templates, ebooks, software licenses, SaaS subscriptions and membership content. Data cut-off: 7 November 2026; prices come from the official Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy and Paddle pricing pages, in USD, excluding tax; all TCOs are editorial calculations, not vendor quotes. “Direct/marketplace, payment methods, tax/fraud, subscriptions/licenses” differ, so official facts, editorial assumptions and non-comparable items are kept separate.

Three rules to remember

Gumroad: 10%+$0.50 direct, 30% via Discover, no monthly fee, MoR handles tax. Lemon Squeezy: 5%+$0.50, no monthly fee, MoR handles tax/compliance, 16 payment methods, 95 currencies. Paddle: 5%+$0.50, no monthly fee, MoR handles tax/compliance/fraud/buyer support, custom for high volume. At $50 AOV and $5k/month: Gumroad 550, Lemon/Paddle 300; at $50k/month: 5,500 vs 3,000. Check the fixed fee at small orders and the percentage at large orders.

Three MoR meters: percentage + fixed fee, Discover separate

Gumroad: 10% + $0.50 per transaction through your profile or direct links; 30% per transaction when a new customer finds and buys through the Discover marketplace; no monthly fee; Merchant of Record handling all tax obligations since 1 January 2025. Lemon Squeezy: 5% + $0.50 per transaction for ecommerce features, no monthly fee; the page lists 16 payment methods (including PayPal), 95 currencies, global VAT/sales-tax calculation/collection/filing and fraud protection included; contact for volume pricing. Paddle: 5% + $0.50 per Checkout transaction, no monthly fee; as MoR it handles global tax/compliance, fraud/chargebacks and buyer support; custom pricing for high volume/low ticket. All three have no monthly fee; cost scales with revenue and transaction count; refunds/chargebacks/tax/payout terms apply.

TCO: $50 AOV, $5k/$20k/$50k monthly revenue

At a $50 average order, no refunds/chargebacks and platform fees only: $5,000/month (100 transactions) — Gumroad 500+50=550, Lemon 250+50=300, Paddle 250+50=300; $20,000 (400) — 2,000+200=2,200 vs 1,000+200=1,200; $50,000 (1,000) — 5,000+500=5,500 vs 2,500+500=3,000. Effective rates: Gumroad 11%, Lemon/Paddle 6%. Annual: at $5k, 6,600 vs 3,600; at $20k, 26,400 vs 14,400; at $50k, 66,000 vs 36,000. If all sales go through Discover, Gumroad’s 30% is much higher than 10%; the table assumes direct sales.

Editorial calculation, not a quote. Formula = revenue × percentage + transactions × 0.50; direct sales, $50 AOV, no refunds/chargebacks/extra payment methods/international fees/tax; Gumroad via Discover is 30%. Excludes tax, payout fees, subscription/license add-ons, support and custom contracts.

AOV sensitivity: the fixed $0.50 hurts small orders more

Effective rate = percentage + 0.50 / AOV. At $5,000/month and $10 AOV (500 transactions): Gumroad 500+250=750 (15%), Lemon/Paddle 250+250=500 (10%); $25 (200): 600 (12%) vs 350 (7%); $50 (100): 550 (11%) vs 300 (6%); $100 (50): 525 (10.5%) vs 275 (5.5%); $200 (25): 512.50 (10.25%) vs 262.50 (5.25%). The lower the AOV, the more the fixed $0.50 matters; the higher the AOV, the more the percentage gap (10% vs 5%) is worth. Below a $20 AOV, calculate the effective rate before arguing “5% vs 10%”; above $100, the 5% advantage compounds across the year.

Editorial calculation, not a quote. Fixed $5,000 monthly revenue, varying only AOV and transaction count; excludes refunds/chargebacks, extra payment methods/currencies, tax, payout fees and subscription/license add-ons; real order distribution is not a single AOV and should be weighted.

What MoR buys: tax, fraud, payment methods

Merchant of Record (MoR) means the platform is the seller of record and handles sales tax/VAT/GST registration, calculation, collection and filing, and bears the compliance responsibility; that is usually the main value of a 5%–10% fee. Gumroad states it has been MoR since 1 January 2025 and handles all tax obligations; Lemon Squeezy as MoR handles tax calculation/collection/filing and lists 16 payment methods, 95 currencies and fraud protection; Paddle as MoR handles tax/compliance, fraud/chargebacks and buyer support. If you use Stripe/PayPal directly, processing is about 2.9% + $0.30, but tax registration/filing, fraud/chargebacks, buyer support and compliance are yours — the 2%–7% saved can be eaten by tax/operations, especially cross-border.

Which option fits which scenario?

Simplest, willing to trade 30% for marketplace traffic: Gumroad; software/licenses/templates, wanting a 5% fee + many payment methods/currencies + MoR tax: Lemon Squeezy; SaaS/subscriptions, wanting high-volume custom pricing + buyer support/chargebacks: Paddle; full control of the payment stack and existing tax/compliance capability: Stripe/PayPal direct (about 2.9% + $0.30, but tax/fraud/support are yours); AOV below $20: calculate the effective rate first, because the fixed $0.50 can turn 5% into 10%; AOV above $100: the 5% vs 10% gap is most valuable. Do not compare only “5% vs 10%” — include fixed fees, Discover, payment methods/currencies, refunds/chargebacks and tax.

What should procurement and acceptance specify?

At least ten things: monthly revenue/AOV distribution, transaction count, direct vs marketplace sales, payment methods/currencies, MoR/tax countries, refunds/chargebacks, payout cycle/fees, subscriptions/licenses, invoicing/compliance, contract/volume discount. Run a 2–4 week POC on real orders and record effective rate, payment success, chargebacks, tax, payout and the bill; do not compare only “5% vs 10%”.

  • Revenue: monthly GMV, AOV distribution, subscription/one-off mix.
  • Transactions: total impact of the $0.50 fixed fee; refunds/chargebacks and whether the fixed fee is returned.
  • Channel: direct/profile vs Discover/marketplace; marketplace cut.
  • Payments: card/PayPal/local methods, currencies, international card fees.
  • Tax: MoR countries, VAT/GST/sales-tax filing, invoices.
  • Chargebacks: handler, fees, appeals, buyer support.
  • Payout: cycle, currency, fees, minimum.
  • Product: licenses/subscriptions/upgrades/refunds/trials.
  • Compliance: PCI, residency, privacy, export/sanctions.
  • Contract: volume discount, minimum fee, renewal, exit/migration.

FAQ

Which of the three is cheapest?

Direct sales at $50 AOV: Lemon Squeezy and Paddle are both 5%+$0.50, about half of Gumroad’s 10%+$0.50; Gumroad’s advantage is simplicity and Discover traffic, but Discover sales are 30%. High volume/low ticket can be custom-priced.

Why does 5%+$0.50 become 10% at low AOV?

Effective rate = 5% + 0.50/AOV. At $10, 0.50 is 5%, total 10%; at $50, 0.50 is 1%, total 6%; at $200, 0.50 is 0.25%, total 5.25%. The fixed fee hurts small orders more.

What is Gumroad’s 30%?

It is the rate when a new customer finds and buys through the Gumroad Discover marketplace; sales through your profile or direct links remain 10%+$0.50. A high Discover share raises the effective rate well above 10%.

What does MoR do?

The platform acts as seller of record, handling sales tax/VAT/GST registration, calculation, collection and filing, and bears compliance; it usually also covers fraud/chargebacks/buyer support. Stripe/PayPal direct is cheaper but leaves those to you.

Lemon Squeezy and Paddle are both 5%+$0.50 — how to choose?

By product and scale: Lemon Squeezy leans digital products/licenses/templates, with 16 payment methods/95 currencies listed; Paddle leans SaaS/subscriptions/software, emphasizing tax/compliance/fraud/buyer support and high-volume custom pricing. Choose by payment methods, tax coverage, chargebacks and contract.

Who wins at high AOV?

At $100+, the percentage gap is most valuable: 5% vs 10% saves 5% of revenue directly; prefer the 5% tier or negotiate high volume with Paddle. Consider Gumroad only for its marketplace/minimal setup.

What hidden costs should we expect?

Refunds/chargebacks, international card/currency fees, extra payment methods, payout fees, tax filing outside coverage, subscription/license add-ons, migration/export, support and minimum fees. Gumroad’s Discover 30% and Lemon/Paddle’s international/payment-method terms need line-by-line confirmation.

How do we choose and accept?

Calculate the effective rate (percentage + fixed/AOV), then check MoR tax coverage, payment methods/currencies, chargebacks/support, payout and contract. A 2–4 week POC on real orders records rate, success, chargebacks, tax, payout and the bill before signing.

Research method and limitations

This article separates “official facts” from “editorial modelling”: Gumroad’s 10%+$0.50 direct, 30% Discover, no monthly fee and MoR since 1 January 2025 come from Gumroad Pricing; Lemon Squeezy’s 5%+$0.50, no monthly fee, 16 payment methods/95 currencies/MoR tax come from Lemon Squeezy Pricing; Paddle’s 5%+$0.50, no monthly fee, MoR tax/compliance/fraud/buyer support/high-volume custom come from Paddle Pricing. The TCOs are arithmetic at $50 AOV and $5k/$20k/$50k monthly revenue plus $10–$200 AOV sensitivity, not vendor quotes.

Eight limitations: (1) only US public list prices are used, excluding tax, refunds/chargebacks, payout fees, international card/currency fees, extra payment methods and custom contracts; (2) only platform fees are counted, excluding Stripe/PayPal direct, tax tools, fraud tools, support and migration; (3) AOV is modelled as a single value; real order distribution must be weighted; (4) Discover/marketplace share materially changes Gumroad’s effective rate; (5) the three MoRs’ tax country coverage, payment methods, chargeback handling and buyer support are not fully equivalent; (6) payment success, chargeback rate, tax filing coverage, payout speed and migration cost were not tested; (7) Payhip, Sellfy, SendOwl and Shopify Digital Downloads are excluded; (8) prices and terms can change by contract, region and exchange rate. Treat this as an effective-rate conversion template and replace assumptions with a 2–4 week real-order POC.
